Why I Need Sunscreen?
This one question I asked myself again and again while I gained my senses to skincare. I honestly thought sunscreens were a waste of money because they did not bring any positive changes to my skin. It took me 3 years to understand that sunscreens are not to change your skin but to protect your skin. Duhh!!
I would not give you 5-10 reasons but only my top 2 reasons as to why I started applying sunscreen on a daily basis:
1. Prevent Discoloration and maintain even skin tone:
Trust me when I say this, I did not apply sunscreen until 2015, and the uneven skin tone on my forehead and rest of the face became so visible that it started looking weird. This is because of the sunburn I got on my forehead in the past years by exposing my face out in the sun without the sunscreen (check out my forehead in the picture below). So, if you do not want this to happen with you. Please apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the harmful UV rays of the sun that damages your skin cells and make the discolouration apparent.
If that is not enough, UV rays also disrupt the collagen production in the skin cells causing fine lines, ageing and wrinkles. And I know you don’t want that!
2. Reduces the Risk of Cancer:
I never took cancer seriously until I saw people around me suffering from this disease. As I was just growing up, you can call this as unawareness towards the disease as well. And with the increasing pollution, damage to the ozone layer, the risk of cancer is now more than ever.
This has been scientifically proven that regular application of sunscreen prevents skin cancer by reducing melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and precancerous skin lesions. Refer to this study for more information Topical Sunscreen Application Preventing Skin Cancer: Systematic Review.
Apart from these two reasons, I would like to tell you guys that sunscreens in no way is the nuisance of marketers to sell you things, you don’t need (because that is what I used to think) rather it’s the requisite we should not avoid.
Thank you for reading! Hope you liked this one.
In my next blog, I will be telling you how I select my sunscreen and what brands I buy! Till then, Stay safe, Stay Home :).
